Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the newly established Thakurgaon University will be built as a world-class institution where recruitment and academic standards will remain free from political interference, favouritism and nepotism.
Speaking at the inauguration of the university’s temporary office in Thakurgaon on Friday, Fakhrul said all appointments, from teachers to administrative officials, would be made strictly on merit and qualifications.
“We want to develop Thakurgaon University into a globally competitive institution. There will be no place for political influence, nepotism or partisan considerations in recruitment,” he said.
The temporary office has been set up in the Tatipara area of Thakurgaon town, marking the beginning of the university’s operational activities.
Fakhrul described the university as a long-awaited achievement for the people of Thakurgaon, saying it represents the aspirations of the district’s residents for higher education and development.
He stressed that maintaining educational quality would be essential if the institution is to earn national and international recognition.
The minister also thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the government for taking steps to establish the university.
According to Fakhrul, residents of Thakurgaon had long demanded both a university and a medical college.
He said the government responded quickly by establishing the university, appointing a vice-chancellor and opening a temporary office.
“The launch of the temporary office is an important milestone in making the university fully operational,” he said.
Among those present at the programme were State Minister for Water Resources Forhad Hossain Azad, Thakurgaon-3 lawmaker Zahidul Islam and the university’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Md Israfil.
Senior government officials, political leaders, academics, journalists and local dignitaries also attended the event.
