Students of Titumir College have brought traffic to a halt on the busy Mohakhali-Gulshan road in Dhaka as they demand that their college be upgraded to a university.
The demonstration began on Monday at around 11 AM, causing immediate traffic disruption.
As the students blocked the road, all movement in the area came to a standstill, resulting in major inconvenience for commuters.
The ripple effect of the blockage has spread to other areas of the city, leading to further traffic jams.
The protesting students are determined to continue their road blockade until their demands are addressed.
However, there has been no positive response from the authorities so far.
On Sunday night, the students had announced that they would block the road starting from 11 AM on Monday, continuing until 10 PM.
In addition to the road blockade, some students have been on a hunger strike to emphasize their demand.
For days now, Titumir College has been witnessing continuous unrest as students rally for the institution’s transformation into a university.
Though the protests were sporadic on Sunday due to the Bishwa Ijtema, by afternoon, students had blocked the Mohakhali-Banani road, severely impacting traffic flow in the area.
After briefly returning to their campus, the students resumed their protests in the evening by staging a sit-in demonstration on Amtali road in Mohakhali.
By night, they temporarily lifted the blockade and announced plans for a press conference.
Students have been out on the streets for several days, pressing for the status upgrade, causing immense traffic woes across the city.
Meanwhile, some students, who are participating in the hunger strike, have entered the sixth day of their protest.
Several of them have fallen ill and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
