Members of the BNP-affiliated student wing, Chhatra Dal, have blocked the Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Samya, a student of Dhaka University.
The protest began around 3:45 PM on Sunday (May 18) as Chhatra Dal activists took position at Shahbagh, effectively bringing vehicular movement in the area to a standstill.
Chhatra Dal`s central president Rakibul Islam Rakib and general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir were present at the protest, alongside leaders from the Dhaka metropolitan and various unit branches.
Earlier in the day, DU students had staged a separate sit-in in front of Shahbagh Police Station starting at 12:00 PM to press the same demand.
On May 16, students had also marched from the Raju Sculpture and surrounded the police station, demanding swift action.
At that time, following assurances from police officials, the students withdrew after issuing a 48-hour ultimatum.
Shahriar Alam Samya was a student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research, University of Dhaka, and served as the literature and publication secretary of the Chhatra Dal unit at Sir A. F. Rahman Hall. He was originally from Ullapara in Sirajganj.
On the night of May 13, Samya was fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan while riding a motorcycle. Police have since arrested three suspects—Tamim Hawlader (30), Samrat Mallik (28), and Palash Sardar (30)—all hailing from Madaripur. They have been sent to jail following initial proceedings.
