Broadcasting icon BBC turns 100

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), a major player in the media world, turns 100 on Tuesday, celebrating with one eye on its famous past and another on its uncertain future.

In the past century, the BBC has become one of Britain's most recognizable and well-respected international brands, fulfilling its initial aim to "inform, educate, and entertain."

According to the corporation's 2021–2022 annual report, the broadcaster reaches 492 million people per week.

"For a century, the BBC has been a beacon of trusted news and programming across the world, as well as being part of the fabric of the UK and one of its key institutions," BBC director-general Tim Davie said of the landmark.

He added, "It has been a story of a devotion to public service and constant reinvention -- which those in the BBC today remain utterly committed to,".
