Floods submerge 25 villages in Feni as river embankments collapse

People move on a rickshaw through a flooded street amid severe flooding in Feni.

At least 25 villages across Fulgazi, Parshuram, and Sonagazi upazilas in Feni district have been flooded after sections of the embankments along the Muhuri and Chhoto Feni rivers collapsed due to continuous rainfall and surging water from upstream in India.

The worst-affected areas include Jangal Ghona, Sahebnagar, Godanagar, and Derpara in Fulgazi, western parts of Parshuram, and the southern regions of Sonagazi.

The floodwaters have inundated homes, rice fields, fish enclosures, and roads, severely disrupting daily life.

According to the Water Development Board, the Muhuri River is currently flowing 137 centimeters above the danger level.

Several weak points of the embankments gave way under the force of strong currents, resulting in widespread inundation.

Efforts are underway to contain the damage using geo-bags and sandbags, as confirmed by both the district administration and the Water Development Board.

However, the situation continues to worsen for affected residents, many of whom have sought shelter on elevated roads or in local schools.

Numerous families unable to access official shelters have been forced to spend the night outdoors, often with livestock and children, under extremely vulnerable conditions.

Local residents have expressed frustration, noting that the same embankment breaches occur every monsoon season but are never addressed with permanent solutions.

As floodwaters continue to rise, the need for sustainable flood prevention measures has become more urgent than ever.
