The government on Tuesday introduced the Bogura University Bill, 2026 in Parliament, paving the way for the establishment of a full-fledged public university in Bogura in place of a science and technology university proposed more than two decades ago but never implemented.

Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon placed the bill before the House, which was later referred to the relevant parliamentary standing committee for detailed examination. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three working days.

According to the bill‍‍`s statement of objectives, the Bogura Science and Technology University Act, 2001 was published in the official gazette on July 15, 2001, but was never enforced.

With preparations now underway to establish the institution, the government has decided to replace the earlier plan with a comprehensive public university offering a wider range of academic programmes.

The proposed Bogura University will provide undergraduate and postgraduate education in science, life sciences, engineering, technology, arts, social sciences, business administration, law, agriculture, medical sciences and other emerging fields.

The government said the draft law was prepared in line with the Prime Minister‍‍`s commitment to establish a comprehensive university in Bogura to meet the growing demand for higher education and research in the region.

It also noted that nearly 95 percent of the provisions of the 2001 law would require amendment, making it more practical to enact a new law instead of revising the existing legislation.

Once established, the university is expected to expand higher education opportunities for students in Bogura and the country‍‍`s northern region while promoting research, innovation and skills development.
