On Sunday, several hundred students from the Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) gathered in Shahbagh, Dhaka, to demand action on four important issues.
The protest started around 11 AM and led to traffic being halted along the road connecting TSC to Shahbagh.
The students gathered in front of the museum around 11:15 AM, expressing their frustration with the Ministry of Health’s failure to take visible steps toward fulfilling promises made to them.
These promises were made after their previous protest, but no action had been taken, leading to the protestors` decision to organize a long march to demand change.
In a statement released on Sunday, the General MATS Students Unity Council outlined their demands.
They are calling for the urgent filling of vacant positions within the Health and Family Welfare Directorate, where recruitment has been stalled for over 12 years.
They are also asking for the creation of the position of Assistant Medical Officer to serve at community clinics, the renaming of the institution, and the resolution of issues with the 2021 course curriculum, including the introduction of a new intern logbook.
Additionally, they are seeking recognition for higher education in clinical subjects by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) and want amendments made to the proposed draft law for the Allied Health Professional Board, along with changes to its provisions.
This protest follows an earlier demonstration by MATS students on January 22, when they blocked Shahbagh for the same reasons.
The students remain hopeful that their concerns will soon be addressed, but for now, their protests continue as they fight for what they believe are essential changes.
