Renowned scholar Jatin Sarkar passes away

Mymensingh, August 13: Eminent writer and educationist Professor Jatin Sarkar passed away on Wednesday at around 2:45 PM at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, his son Suman Sarkar confirmed to media.

Jatin Sarkar had been suffering from age-related health issues for several months, along with polyarthritis. In June, he underwent surgery due to multiple health complications.

He was first taken to his daughter’s residence in Mymensingh but was later admitted to a Dhaka hospital after his condition worsened. He was recently brought back to Mymensingh.

Sheikh Bahar Majumdar, General Secretary of the Mymensingh district unit of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), told media that Sarkar died in the ICU at 2:40 PM.

His body remains at the hospital and will be taken to the district Udichi office at 4 PM for public homage, after which it will be transported to Netrokona for the funeral rites.

Born on August 18, 1936, in Chandpara, Kendua, Netrokona, Jatin Sarkar was a former teacher of the Bangla Department at Nasirabad College, Mymensingh. He was deeply involved in progressive literature, leftist politics, and cultural movements, and served two terms as president of the Bangladesh Udichi Sangeet Shilpi Sangsad Central Committee.

As a writer, Sarkar received numerous accolades, including the Independence Award in 2010, the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2007, the Prothom Alo Best Book Award in 2005 for his work “Pakistaner Janma-Mrityu Darshan”, as well as the Dr. Enamul Haque Gold Medal, Khalekdad Chowdhury Literary Award, and Moniruddin Yusuf Literary Award.

After over 42 years in teaching, he retired in 2002 and returned to his roots in Netrokona with his wife Kanon Sarkar, residing in his home in the Satpai area of the town.
