Afghanistan`s worst winter in more than a decade has resulted in at least 78 deaths from cold, said authorities of the country on Thursday.
According to officials, deaths from the cold have been reported in eight provinces among 34.
In the midst of a severe economic crisis, Afghanistan has had its coldest winter in 15 years, as low as -34°C (-29.2°F).
Abdullah Ahmadi, the chief of the ministry of disaster management`s operations centre for emergency situations, stated that because the weather is expected to turn colder over the coming days, it is important to think about providing humanitarian aid to those who are in need.
Additionally, over the last nine days, 77,000 animals have died, posing threat to worsen the food insecurity in the nation.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) stated on Twitter that, Afghan families are put at further risk as a result of lost livelihoods and assets at a time when 21.2 million people desperately require sustained food and agricultural support.
