DUCSU VP candidate Jalal sued in attempted murder case

An attempted murder case has been filed against independent vice president (VP) candidate Jalal Ahmed Jalal in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections.

The case was lodged by the Dhaka University administration with Shahbagh Police Station after Jalal allegedly stabbed his roommate, Rabiul Haque, a student of the Political Science department.

Confirming the development on Wednesday afternoon, Shahbagh Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur said that Jalal had already been produced before the court.

The stabbing incident took place around midnight on Tuesday at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. Following the attack, Rabiul was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Jalal, a student of the Television and Film Department, was immediately expelled from the dormitory by the hall provost, Professor Md. Sirajul Islam, who also announced that steps would be taken to terminate his studentship.

Witnesses said the stabbing was the result of a long-standing dispute between the two roommates. According to Rabiul, Jalal entered the room around 12:30 a.m., switched on the lights, and began making noise. When Rabiul asked him to be quiet since he needed to attend the library early in the morning, Jalal became enraged, accused him of being an outsider, and suddenly attacked him with a knife.

University authorities later handed Jalal over to Shahbagh police. DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said that legal action would be taken against him in accordance with the law. He also stressed that the incident would have no impact on the upcoming DUCSU elections.
