Two more people have died from dengue in the past 24 hours as Aedes mosquito-borne infections continue to rise at the beginning of the monsoon season in the country, bringing the total number of deaths this year to 12.
The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Wednesday by the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services.
The release said that in the 24 hours leading up to 8 a.m. on Wednesday, 157 new dengue patients were admitted to hospitals across the country.
Among the newly admitted patients, 28 are being treated in hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation area and 29 in Dhaka South City Corporation. In addition, 11 patients were admitted in other districts of Dhaka Division, 56 in Barishal, 16 in Chattogram, 10 in Khulna, 3 in Mymensingh, and 4 in Rajshahi Division.
According to health authorities, 119 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals during the same period after recovery.
Since January 1 this year, a total of 5,317 people have been hospitalized with dengue, while 4,919 have recovered and returned home.
Statistics show that only in the first 23 days of June, seven people have died from dengue and 2,120 cases have been recorded, raising fresh concerns about the spread of the disease during the monsoon season.
Health experts have urged people to eliminate mosquito breeding sites, remove stagnant clean water, and seek medical attention promptly if fever or dengue symptoms appear.
