An International Crimes Tribunal panel has scheduled July 10 for the formal framing of charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, ex‑Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and retired IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al‑Mamun in a crimes‑against‑humanity case dating from July–August 2024.
The three‑member tribunal, chaired by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, announced the date during Monday’s session.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam represented the state, while state‑appointed counsel Amir Hossain appeared on behalf of the absconding Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
Zayed Bin Amjad represented Abdullah Al‑Mamun, who was physically produced in court for today’s hearing.
At the hearing, Amir Hossain moved to dismiss the case against his clients, arguing they bear no responsibility for the alleged offences.
He denied any involvement by Sheikh Hasina or the former home minister in the events described in the indictment.
The prosecution’s application, filed on July 1, alleges that forces loyal to the then‑ruling party—including armed cadres of various party affiliates—obstructed medical treatment for injured protesters.
Ambulances were reportedly stopped, hospital areas were monitored to gather information on demonstrators, and injured individuals were denied care or arrested.
Security agencies, including DGFI and NSI intelligence officers, are accused of raiding hospitals, seizing medical records, and coercing healthcare workers into filing false reports or refusing treatment.
The failure to render timely medical assistance is said to have exacerbated injuries, resulting in multiple deaths.
The indictment singles out August 5, 2024—when mass “March to Dhaka” protests culminated—as a “day of horror” in Bangladesh’s history.
It contends that despite reports that Sheikh Hasina’s government had effectively fallen, police and Ansar units in Dhaka used lethal rifle and shotgun fire against students and civilians at key entry points and downtown locations in a bid to suppress the uprising.
On July 10, the tribunal will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to formally charge the three accused and proceed to trial.
