Dengue claimed five more lives in Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while 311 new patients were hospitalised across the country.
The figures were revealed in a dengue bulletin issued on Thursday (21 August) by the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
According to the DGHS, the deceased included three women and two men.
Of the newly admitted patients, 82 were from areas under Barishal division (outside the city corporation), 37 from Chattogram division (outside the city corporation), 42 from areas of Dhaka division outside the capital, 51 from Dhaka North City Corporation, 61 from Dhaka South City Corporation, 15 from Khulna division (outside the city corporation), two from Mymensingh division (outside the city corporation), and 21 from Rajshahi division (outside the city corporation).
So far this year, a total of 27,782 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of them, 315 were discharged in the past 24 hours, while 1,293 remain hospitalised — including 440 in Dhaka city.
Since January, dengue has claimed 110 lives. Of them, 27 deaths were recorded in August (up to the 21st), 41 in July, 19 in June, 3 in May, 7 in April, 3 in February, and 10 in January. No deaths were reported in March.
Bangladesh saw its worst-ever dengue outbreak in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalised and 1,705 deaths were recorded. In comparison, hospital admissions stood at 101,211 in 2023, 62,382 in 2022, 28,429 in 2021, 1,405 in 2020, and 101,354 in 2019.
