A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced three people to death for killing a teenager after rape in Dhaka`s Keraniganj in 2022.
The convicts are Md Sajib, 25, of Keraniganj, Md Rakib, 23, of Faridpur, and Shaon alias Valka Shaon, 26, of Shariatpur, reports The Daily Star.
Of them, Sajib is absconding while Rakib and Shaon are now in jail.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 of Dhaka pronounced the sentence in presence of the two convicts at the courtroom.
In addition, the tribunal sentenced the three persons to seven years in prison for disappearing the victim`s body.
The punishment of fugitive convict Sajib will be effective from the day of his surrender or arrest, said the judge in his judgement.
The tribunal also acquitted Ali Akbar and Md Riaz as the charges brought against them were not proven.
Earlier the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments, and the tribunal recorded statements of 19 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
According to the case statement, it was alleged that on June 11, 2022 police recovered the body of a teenager floating on a pond in front of the West Bamansur Jame Mosque in Keraniganj area. Later, police filed the case in this connection.
The victim`s friend Brishti Akhter identified the body. Later, police arrested Shaon, and he confessed to a magistrate that he along with the other accused gang-raped, strangled the victim and dumped in a pond.
After investigating the case, police submitted a charge sheet accusing the five people on September 30, 2023.
