Arafat won AL nomination in by-election of Dhaka-17 seat

Mohammad Ali Arafat (Mohammed A Arafat) won the nomination of Awami League in the by-election of the Dhaka-17 seat after the death of actor Farooque. He is the executive member of the Central Committee of Awami League. He is better known as an intellectual than a politician. He was involved in various intellectual activities for Awami League. He spoke on talk shows on behalf of the Awami League and the government. He became the executive member of the party‍‍`s central committee for the first time last December. Now he aims to become a member of the parliament.

In the joint meeting of Awami League‍‍`s local government and parliamentary board at Ganabhaban today, it was announced that Mohammad A. Arafat has been nominated as the party‍‍`s candidate for the by-election of Dhaka-17 seat. Party President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting. In the meeting, party candidates were also nominated for the post of mayor of nine municipalities in the country and for the post of chairman of 37 union councils.

Awami League General Secretary and nomination board member Obaidul Quader told reporters at the gate of Ganabhaban that Arafat had been nominated.

22 people collected party nomination forms to get the nomination of the ruling Awami League in the by-election in this seat. Among them were the leaders of Awami League and its affiliated organizations as well as central leaders, businessmen, actors.

By-elections will be held in this seat on July 17. This vote will be on the paper ballot. This seat was declared vacant after the death of actor Farooque on May 15. This constituency consists of Gulshan, Banani, Vaashantek thana, and the cantonment areas of the capital.
