Factions of the Muslim community in Chandpur are observing the Eid-ul-Fitr as the crescent of Shawwal was sighted in Afghanistan, Niger, Mali and Senegal.
Devotees from Borokul union of Hajiganj upazila in the district offered their Eid prayer at Sadra Hamidia Fazil Madrasa ground on Sunday.
However, a mixed reaction was created among the faction which observe the count of Arabic month based on a moon sighting in any part of the world. Many of them expressed anger.
At least residents of 40 villages under three upazilas in Chandpur have been observing the Eid-ul-Fitr in line with Saudi Arabia and other Middle East countries for 93 years. Even the start fasting—the month of Ramadan—a day earlier than other parts of the country.
Those, who are observing Eid today, say, Sighting the moon at any part of the world means the first day of Eid. So, we are observing the Eid-ul-Fitr meaning that they kept fasting for 29 days.
Alongside, people of dozens of villages of the same belief claim that they observe Eid in line with Saudi Arabia. They will observe the Eid on Monday as Saudi and other Middle East countries will.
