A group of youths staged a fiery protest on the Dhaka-Tangail-Jamuna Bridge highway early Sunday (July 20), reportedly in support of the hartal (strike) called by the ruling Awami League, Dhaka Tribune reports.

Several videos of the demonstration began circulating widely on social media from the morning hours.

According to sources, the protest was organized late Saturday night by members of the banned district unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League. The demonstrators blocked parts of the highway, disrupting traffic in the area.

In one of the viral videos, a group of young men is seen burning wooden planks and plastic chairs on a section of the highway while chanting slogans such as “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.” They can also be heard identifying themselves as members of the Tangail district Chhatra League.

However, the exact location of the protest on the highway has not been confirmed.

When contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tangail Sadar Police Station, Tanvir Ahmed, said, “We have seen the video footage, but we are yet to determine the precise location on the highway where the incident took place.”

The protest and arson have raised concerns over public safety and the potential for further unrest amid ongoing political tensions in the country.
