In the wake of clashes between students and local residents, Section 144 has been imposed at the University of Chittagong (CU) and surrounding areas until midnight on Monday, 1 September.
The order was issued by the office of the Upazila Executive Officer of Hathazari under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to the order, the clash occurred around 11:30 am on Sunday near CU’s Gate No. 2 market in Fatepur Union, Hathazari Upazila, with students and locals confronting each other aggressively. Both parties were reportedly in a confrontational stance.
The Executive Magistrate, Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin, stated that the order aims to control the situation, protect lives and property, and maintain law and order. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, will be enforced along both sides of the road from the eastern boundary of Gate No. 2 market to the railway gate until 12:00 am on Monday.
The order prohibits all types of gatherings, rallies, protests, or assemblies, as well as the possession of explosives, firearms, and other weapons. It also bars any assembly or movement of five or more people in the specified area during the enforcement period.
