Tk 110 crore needed for repair and renovation of polling centers

The Education Engineering Department (EED) has estimated that Tk 110 crore will be required to repair and renovate polling centers deemed unusable for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.

According to Election Commission (EC) sources, the information was revealed on Sunday (August 31) following a letter sent by the EC to the Ministry of Education, requesting necessary renovation work on polling centers.

In response, EED Chief Engineer Md. Altaf Hossain prepared a report outlining the requirements. The report stated that 1,490 educational institutions under the Secondary and Higher Education Division, designated to serve as polling centers, need repair and renovation work. The demand for these repairs, as assessed from the field level, amounts to Tk 33.78 crore.

Additionally, 559 polling centers require construction of boundary walls, for which the demand has been assessed at Tk 76.48 crore.

In total, Tk 110.27 crore will be needed to complete both the renovation work and construction of boundary walls at these educational institutions. Chief Engineer Altaf Hossain has recently written to the Education Secretary seeking allocation of the required funds, with a copy of the letter forwarded to the Election Commission.

Earlier, the EC had urged the Ministry of Education to carry out repairs to potential polling centers using its own resources to ensure they are fit for use during the election.
