DU BCL leader Saikat placed on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed Tanvir Hasan Saikat, General Secretary of the Dhaka University unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), on a three-day remand in connection with a case filed over the July student movement clashes.

The order was passed on Sunday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehera Mahbub, prosecution police officer SI Zinnat Ali confirmed.

Earlier in the day, DB Police Inspector Masum Sardar, the investigating officer of the case from Gulshan Zonal Team, produced Saikat before the court and sought a 10-day remand. Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon represented the state during the hearing.

The prosecution alleged that on July 14, during the student protests, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called the demonstrators "Razakars" at a press conference, sparking outrage. Following this, on instructions from Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, leaders of the Dhaka University and central Chhatra League allegedly mobilized activists from different units and attacked protesters on campus with local weapons, leaving many injured.

Saikat’s lawyer, Tariqul Islam, opposed the remand plea and sought bail, arguing that there was no specific allegation linking his client to the incident.

He said Saikat, a Dhaka University student, had already been held on remand for over 35 days in different cases across various police stations in Dhaka.

Despite DU authorities canceling the studentship of several others, Saikat’s was not revoked, which his lawyer cited as proof of his non-involvement.

After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail plea and granted a three-day remand.

According to the case statement, on July 15 last year, leaders and activists of Chhatra League, Jubo League, and Awami League attacked general students on the DU campus, leaving over 300 injured.

The case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station by Abu Sayad Bin Mahin Sarkar, a student of Ziaur Rahman Hall, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 391 others as accused.

Saikat was arrested on August 14 last year from the Nikunja area of Dhaka.
