The government is set to publish a new recruitment circular soon for assistant teachers in government primary schools.
As part of the preparation, the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has formed an eight-member Central Primary School Teacher Recruitment Committee.
According to a gazette notification issued on Sunday (August 31) and signed by Joint Secretary Rebeca Sultana, the committee has been formed under the Government Primary School Teacher Recruitment Rules, 2025.
The Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education will chair the committee, while the Director (Policy and Operations) of the directorate will serve as member secretary.
Other members include the Additional Secretary (Schools) of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Director General (Revenue) of the Directorate of Primary Education, the Director General of the Bureau of Non-Formal Education, the Joint Secretary (Schools) of the ministry, and representatives from the Ministry of Public Administration and the Public Service Commission.
Earlier, on Thursday (August 28), the ministry published the Government Primary School Teacher Recruitment Rules, 2025.
According to the new rules, 93% of assistant teachers will be recruited on merit, with 20% of positions reserved for graduates in science and 80% for graduates from other disciplines. The remaining 7% quota will be distributed as follows: 5% for children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters, and Biranganas; 1% for ethnic minorities; and 1% for persons with disabilities and third-gender candidates. If sufficient candidates are not found under quotas, the positions will be filled based on merit. Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree, with no third class in any academic exam.
The rules also introduce two new designations—Assistant Teacher (Music) and Assistant Teacher (Physical Education). The maximum age limit for direct recruitment has been raised to 32 years, up from 30 previously. Candidates will face a 100-mark test consisting of a 90-mark written exam and a 10-mark viva voce. The written exam will include 25 marks each in Bangla and English, 20 marks in Mathematics and General Science, and 20 marks in General Knowledge (Bangladesh and international affairs). The pass mark has been set at 50% in both written and viva examinations.
Data from the Directorate of Primary Education shows that as of December 31, 2024, there were 8,043 vacant assistant teacher posts nationwide in government primary schools. Additionally, 5,166 new positions have been created for music and physical education teachers. Recruitment notifications for these posts are expected to be issued next month.
When asked about the possible timeline for the circular, Professor Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, Adviser to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, told Ajker Patrika on Friday (August 29):
“We hope it will be possible to publish the recruitment circular for assistant teachers very soon.”
