2 killed in retaliatory attack over land dispute in Netrokona

Two people were killed and another seriously injured in Netrokona Sadar following retaliatory attacks linked to a long-standing land dispute.

The incidents occurred on Saturday night in Jamati village of Maugati Union, reported Officer-in-Charge of Netrokona Model Police Station, Kazi Shahnewaz.

The deceased have been identified as Dujahan Mia, 48, a former member of the Maugati Union Parishad and husband of current UP member Josuma Akter, and Nur Mohammad, 30, son of Abdul Kader of the same village. Another local, Rafik Mia, sustained serious injuries in the attack.

According to the police, the dispute dates back nearly two years when Amjad promised to purchase land from Dujahan Mia and paid Tk 500,000 but delayed the formal documentation process. Tensions had reportedly escalated between the two sides in recent days.

On Saturday night around 8:45 pm, following a district BNP conference, Dujahan Mia was returning home when assailants attacked him on a village road, stabbing and beating him. Locals rushed him to Netrokona Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

In retaliation, at around 10:30 pm, Dujahan Mia’s supporters attacked Nur Mohammad and Rafik Mia with sharp weapons. Nur Mohammad succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while Rafik Mia was critically injured and later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.

OC Kazi Shahnewaz added that the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy and that police are conducting operations to apprehend those involved in the killings.
