Election will be held in February despite attempts to delay: Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reaffirmed that the 13th National Parliamentary Election will take place in February as scheduled, despite attempts by some quarters to delay the polls.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday evening after a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, Fakhrul said, “A certain force is trying to delay the election. But there is no scope for postponement. The election will be held on the announced date. The discussion with the Chief Adviser was fruitful, and the nation is reassured.”

The BNP delegation at the meeting included Standing Committee members Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, and Professor AZM Zahid Hossain. On the government side, Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Legal Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul, and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan attended.

Earlier in the day, leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party (NCP) also met separately with the Chief Adviser. Following their meeting, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher criticized the government, saying it had undermined neutrality by announcing the election date after holding talks with a party in London.

When asked about Jamaat’s claim, Fakhrul dismissed it outright: “This is completely baseless. The Chief Adviser has full authority to hold discussions with the country’s largest political party.”
