A former Dhaka University (DU) student who moved to the United States in January to seek higher education was killed at a store in Beaumont, Texas, on Friday.
Sheikh Abir-Hossain, 34, was a graduate research assistant at Lamar University, according to reports.
Abir was killed as a store clerk at Kris Food Mart during a robbery by two suspects who fled the scene after grabbing cigarettes.
According to local TV station KFDM, when police came, they discovered Sheikh Abir-Hossain dead from gunshot wounds.
Abir`s elder brother, Jahidul Islam, told the media on Saturday evening that a family member living in New York informed him of his brother`s death that afternoon.
Abir worked as a researcher at Brac University before moving to the United States.
He was an adjunct professor at Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology in Uttara, Dhaka.
He received his bachelor`s and master`s degrees from the Institute of Social Welfare and Research at DU.
Abir`s wife along with her family live in the United States.
