Chhatra Dal leaves panel post vacant in honor of injured student leader Tanbi

Dhaka – The Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has decided not to nominate any candidate for the Research and Publication Secretary post in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, leaving the position vacant as a mark of respect to student activist Sanjida Ahmed Tanbi.

Tanbi, a student of the Clinical Psychology Department (2019–20 session), announced her candidacy for the post earlier this week.

She was severely injured during the July 15 student protests last year, when Bangladesh Chhatra League activists allegedly attacked demonstrators.

A photo of her standing bloodied and leaning on a stick during the protest spread widely across the country, symbolizing the anti-discrimination student movement.

JCD General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir said on Wednesday that out of 28 positions, their panel will contest 27, leaving the Research and Publication Secretary slot (serial no. 9) vacant in Tanbi’s honor.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on the Dhaka University campus.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chhatra Sangh (BAGCHAS) also declared that they would not field a candidate for the same post.

Tanbi had formally submitted her nomination papers on Monday (August 18) at the office of the Chief Returning Officer, located in the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University.
