The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) has demolished the bungalow of former State Minister Nasrul Hamid Bipu, built illegally on the banks of the Buriganga in Keraniganj.
The eviction drive was carried out today (Wednesday) in the Kautail area of Keraniganj.
During the operation, boundary walls and structures of the bungalow—spread across about two acres of occupied land—were torn down. Three two-story buildings, several makeshift shops, and trees were also removed.
Confirming the development, BIWTA Joint Director Mostafizur Rahman said the bungalow had been constructed illegally on the authority’s land, obstructing the natural flow of the river for years. He added that such drives would continue regularly to protect the Buriganga, regardless of the influence or status of those involved.
The drive was conducted with the support of South Keraniganj police, RAB-10, and the Keraniganj Fire Service.
The eviction is being carried out in line with a 2009 High Court order, which directed the removal of all illegal structures built on riverbanks in public interest.
It is notable that on January 16 this year, a court imposed a travel ban on Nasrul Hamid and his wife in connection with a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the ACC, during his tenure as state minister, Hamid abused his power to help his wife, Seema Hamid, amass illegal wealth worth Tk 6.98 crore.
