Wife donates a portion of her liver to save her husband, both die

In a tragic incident in Pune, India, a woman who donated part of her liver to save her ailing husband died days after his death, following a transplant surgery at Sahyadri Hospital.

Bapu Komkar had been suffering from a severe liver disease for a long time. On August 15, his wife, Kamini Komkar, donated a portion of her liver in an effort to save him.

However, Bapu’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the operation, and he died two days later on August 17. On August 21, Kamini also passed away after developing a severe infection.

The double tragedy has sparked allegations of medical negligence from the family, who have demanded a proper investigation. In response, the Maharashtra Health Department has issued a show-cause notice to Sahyadri Hospital, asking for all details of the surgery to be submitted by Monday.

Confirming receipt of the notice, the hospital authorities said in a statement that the surgery was conducted following international medical protocols. They added that Bapu was a high-risk patient with multiple complications.

“We deeply sympathize with the Komkar family. Living-donor liver transplantation is a highly complex procedure, and in this case, the patient had severe comorbidities,” the statement read.

According to the hospital, the Komkar family had been fully counseled about the potential risks before the surgery. After the operation, Bapu suffered cardiogenic shock and could not be revived despite maximum medical efforts. Kamini initially showed signs of recovery but later developed septic shock and multi-organ dysfunction, which proved fatal despite advanced treatment.

The hospital reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care and assured full cooperation with the investigation, while pledging continued support to the grieving family.
