Police have arrested arrested BNP New Market unit president Maqbool Hossain in connection with the clashes between Dhaka College students and New Market traders.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police held Maqbool, the number one accused in a case filed by the police over the mayhem, from his Dhanmondi home on Friday, officials said.
“After his arrest, he was brought to the DB office on Minto Road for questioning," said DB Additional Commissioner AKM Hafiz Akter confirming the incident.
Welcome and Capital Fastfood, from where the clash started on 18 April at night, was allotted to Maqbool by the Dhaka South City Corporation.
However, Maqbool did not run any of them. He had rented them to Rafiqul Islam and Shahidul Islam.
The clash between the students of Dhaka College and the traders of New Market started on 18 April at around 12am lasting for about two and a half hours.
Although the situation became normal late at night, the clashes started again around 10am the next day till evening.
Over 50 people from both sides were injured in the incident and are being treated at the hospital. Some of them are in critical condition.
In addition, two people have died in the incident while undergoing treatment.
So far, four cases have been filed in connection with the clash and mayhem.
