Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta passes away at 66

Acclaimed Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta died on Wednesday after suffering severe injuries in a fall at a residence in South Kolkata, family members confirmed. He was 66.

According to relatives, Dutta fell from the terrace of his wife’s residence near the Gariahat area and was rushed to a nearby private hospital in critical condition.

Despite medical efforts, he later died from multiple injuries.

Dutta was widely recognised in Bengali cinema for blending satire, politics and social commentary in his films.

He first gained major attention with his 2012 directorial debut Bhooter Bhabishyat, a political satire that became both a critical and commercial success.

The film established him as one of the distinctive voices in contemporary Bengali filmmaking, known for using humour and sharp observations to address social and political themes.

Over the years, he directed several notable productions, including Aschorjo Prodip, Borunbabur Bondhu and Aparajito.

Among his later works, Aparajito drew particular attention for its tribute to legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

Released on Ray’s 101st birth anniversary, the film explored the celebrated director’s life and creative journey. Dutta was known as a longtime admirer of Ray, whose influence often appeared in his storytelling style and cinematic approach.

Apart from filmmaking, Dutta was also known for his outspoken political views.

A critic of the West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee, he became involved in a major controversy following the release of Bhobishyoter Bhoot in 2019.

The film reportedly faced screening disruptions in theatres, leading to protests and a legal battle.

The case later reached India’s Supreme Court, which directed the West Bengal government to pay compensation to the film’s producer and imposed an additional fine on the state.

In its observation, the court stated that freedom of speech could not be suppressed due to fear of public backlash.

Dutta’s final film as director was Joto Kando Kolkatatei, starring Abir Chatterjee, Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed and Dulal Lahiri in key roles.

His death has prompted reactions from members of the Bengali film industry and admirers who remembered him for his distinct storytelling, political courage and contribution to modern Bengali cinema.
