Argentina are set to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals, and head coach Lionel Scaloni is unlikely to make major changes to his starting XI for the crucial match. The Argentina boss is expected to stick with the core structure that featured in the previous game.
The Albiceleste secured a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the last-16 stage after falling 2-0 behind. The coaching staff were pleased with the team’s performance, believing Argentina dominated much of the match. However, missed chances and defensive errors made the contest more difficult than expected.
As a result, Scaloni is not expected to make significant changes against Switzerland. However, there are still doubts over two positions. It remains unclear whether Nahuel Molina or Gonzalo Montiel will start at right-back. There is also a possibility that Lautaro Martínez could replace Julián Alvarez in attack.
Molina and Alvarez struggled to make an impact in the last-16 match, while Montiel and Lautaro impressed after coming off the bench. Lautaro, in particular, played a key role in Argentina’s second goal and provided an excellent assist for the third. This could persuade Scaloni to make late changes to the starting lineup.
The Argentina coach will test different combinations during the two remaining training sessions before the match against Switzerland. The final lineup will be confirmed afterwards. However, if everything goes according to plan, Argentina are unlikely to make more than one or two changes.
Argentina’s possible XI:
Emiliano Martinez; Nahuel Molina/Gonzalo Montiel, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernandez, Leandro Paredes, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez/Lautaro Martinez.
