Flood, landslide death toll rises to 57 in seven districts

The death toll from continuous heavy rainfall, landslides and flooding has risen to 57 in seven districts of Bangladesh. Another 40 people have been injured, while 4,079 affected residents are currently staying in 111 shelters opened for displaced people.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief disclosed the updated figures on Wednesday afternoon.

According to the ministry, the seven flood-affected districts are Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. Floodwaters have inundated 57 upazilas, 334 unions and nine municipalities across these districts.

Cox’s Bazar reported the highest number of deaths, with 32 fatalities, including 19 locals and 13 Rohingya refugees. Chattogram recorded 15 deaths, followed by Bandarban with six, Rangamati with three and Moulvibazar with one.

Among the injured, one person is from Khagrachhari, two from Bandarban, 25 from Cox’s Bazar (20 locals and five Rohingya), and 12 from Chattogram.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief said rescue, rehabilitation and relief distribution activities are continuing in the affected areas. In Cox’s Bazar, allocations have been made for cash assistance, rice, corrugated iron sheets and other relief supplies. An additional Tk 20 lakh has also been allocated from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

For Chattogram district, the government has allocated Tk 65 lakh, 1,200 metric tonnes of rice and 49,100 packets of dry food.

According to the ministry, additional allocations of Tk 1.75 crore and 3,250 metric tonnes of rice were made in phases for flood-affected districts between July 7 and July 12. Besides, a total of Tk 4.60 crore has been allocated for general relief activities across all 64 districts of the country.
