The Bangladesh national football team was scheduled to return home on a 3:00 pm flight Tuesday, but the players never made it out of their hotel as mounting unrest in Kathmandu forced the cancellation of their flight.
Team manager Amer Khan said that the squad remains inside the hotel due to the volatile situation outside.
“Protesters have gathered in front of our hotel and are staging demonstrations, so we could not leave for the airport. The flight has been canceled,” he said.
A group of demonstrators reportedly entered the team’s hotel but left after realizing that no politicians or VIPs were staying there—only the football teams of Bangladesh and Nepal.
Authorities partially suspended operations at Kathmandu airport as protests swept the capital.
Widespread demonstrations, driven by Gen Z activists, have brought Nepal to a standstill in recent days. The protesters are demanding an end to government corruption and voicing anger over the shutdown of social media platforms.
While Monday’s unrest was centered outside Thamel, demonstrators on Tuesday occupied the streets of the popular tourist district. Near Muslim Chowk in Thamel, protesters surrounded a police station, hurling bricks and stones at buildings, while blocking roads by setting tires ablaze.
