Bangladesh made history in the SAFF Under-20 Championship, clinching the title with a dramatic 4–3 victory over India in a penalty shootout in the final held in Malé, the capital of the Maldives.
With neither side able to find the net during regulation time, the match was decided on penalties. Expatriate forward Ronan O’Sullivan sealed the win, successfully converting Bangladesh’s fifth and decisive spot-kick.
Bangladesh dominated possession early in the match and showed attacking intent in the first half but failed to break the deadlock. India came back stronger after the break, gaining control in midfield and creating pressure up front. However, Bangladesh’s defense, along with goalkeeper Mahin, stood firm to deny them any clear chances.
Bangladesh also threatened on the counterattack, putting India under pressure on several occasions. Midway through the second half, Ronan’s brother Declan was introduced, adding pace on the wing and creating a few opportunities. Late in the game, he set up Ronan with a fine pass, but the forward’s effort was denied by the advancing goalkeeper.
Ultimately, Bangladesh held their nerve in the shootout to secure a 4–3 win, retaining the title for the second consecutive time—an impressive achievement for the nation in age-group football.
