Lionel Messi has expressed hope that Neymar will recover in time to play in next month’s FIFA World Cup.
Messi said Neymar remains one of football’s top players and described his possible return as important for both Brazil and the sport.
The Brazil forward has been out of international football since suffering a serious knee injury during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in 2023.
Although Neymar returned to his boyhood club Santos FC, injuries have continued to limit his appearances.
Messi, who played alongside Neymar at FC Barcelona and later at Paris Saint-Germain, said their friendship makes it difficult for him to be neutral.
He praised Neymar’s personality and said the Brazilian deserves good things in his career.
Messi also spoke about Argentina’s chances of defending the World Cup title, saying the competition will be difficult.
The Argentine captain named Spain, France and Brazil among the strongest teams heading into the tournament.
