Spain sixth country to net 100 WC goals

Spain became the sixth country to score 100 World Cup goals on Wednesday and in the process registered their biggest ever victory in the mega tournament, according to News9.

In the process they condemned Costa Rica to their worst ever defeat in the World Cup and equalled their worst ever defeat, a 0-7 humiliation against Mexico in 1975. Dani Olmo began the goal rush, finding the net in the 11th minute, with a quick turn after collecting a chipped pass from Gavi before calmly lifting his shot over Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas.

That strike made Spain the sixth team after Brazil (229), Germany (227), Argentina (138), Italy (128) and France (124) to enter the elite 100 goal list at the World Cup.

Gavi also made history as at the age of 18 years and 110 days, the Barcelona midfielder became the youngest player ever to feature for Spain at a major international tournament. Before Gavi, Cesc Fabregas was the youngest at 19 years and 41 days.

Gavi capped the memorable day with a goal from the outside of his right boot that on 74 minutes that made him Spain's youngest goal scorer at the World Cup. Gavi also becomes the youngest player to score at a World Cup since Brazil's Pele's brace against Sweden in 1958 (17 years 249 days).

He's also the third youngest goalscorer in World Cup history behind Pelé and Mexico's Manuel Rosas. Spain are eyeing their second World Cup title, having won it in 2010 but have struggled to put up a good run of form since. Spain are clubbed in Group E with four-time champions Germany, Japan and Costa Rica.
