Sports is set to receive equal footing with core academic subjects as the government moves to make it compulsory from class four beginning next academic year.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque confirmed the decision in parliament on Sunday, stating that the initiative aligns directly with the prime minister’s electoral pledge.
The programme will initially introduce seven selected sporting disciplines, with plans to gradually expand the list in the coming years. According to the minister, the move is aimed at reducing children’s growing dependence on digital devices by encouraging regular physical activity.
“It will start with seven disciplines, with more added gradually. After returning home, many children become overly dependent on digital devices. This initiative aims to bring them back to the fields and encourage an active lifestyle,” he said.
The former footballer also added, "In the first financial year, we will build ten sports villages in the initial phase.”
Aminul Haque further noted that structured participation in sports could play an important role in promoting a drug-free society by keeping young people engaged in healthy and purposeful activities.
To support the initiative, the government plans to develop playgrounds in all 495 upazilas, ensuring students have access to proper sporting facilities at the local level.
Authorities have already been instructed to ensure effective nationwide implementation of the programme, marking a significant shift in the country’s approach to youth development through sports
