Neymar Jr. has come back home. After playing for big European clubs like Barcelona and PSG and more recently, Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, the Brazilian star has returned to his roots at Santos, the club where it all started for him.
The Urbano Caldeira Stadium, where Neymar started his career as a young football player, gave him a royal welcome back on Friday, January 31.
Fans applauded wildly when they saw their favorite Neymar, and the stadium was alive with excitement as local singers played.
There was a big sign that said, "The Prince is Back," in honor of his return, and the celebration was evident.
After spending some time in Saudi Arabia, the Brazilian forward, who had been out for some time due to an injury, made the decision to return to Santos for a six-month deal.
Santos, however, has plans to keep him longer. During his first press conference at the club, Neymar spoke openly about his future goals.
“I want to return to the national team. I still have one mission left to accomplish—a World Cup. I believe this is my last chance, and I will pursue this goal with everything I’ve got,” Neymar shared.
He also explained why he left Al Hilal, despite being comfortable there. According to Neymar, some decisions are about more than just football contracts.
He said, "Some decisions are completely outside of football contracts. I was happy in Al Hilal with my family, but I wasn’t enjoying training. When this opportunity came, I didn’t hesitate. It feels like I’ve returned to being 17 years old again. I’m so excited to get back on the pitch."
Neymar’s return to Santos marks a special chapter in his career. After starting at Santos in the youth teams from 2003 to 2009, he went on to play for the senior squad for four more years.
After making the big transfer to Europe in 2013, Neymar made his mark on the international club scene by first joining Barcelona and then PSG.
However, his period at Al Hilal was less fortunate; he made just seven appearances and scored one goal in the year and a half before leaving for Brazil.
Having returned to the club that helped him become the superstar he is today; Neymar has now completed a full circle.
