The government has initiated a plan to provide free residential flats to the families of those who were martyred during the July mass uprising.
As part of this effort, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works has proposed a project to construct 804 flats, with an estimated initial budget of BDT 7.62 billion.
The flats will be built on government-owned land in Section 14 of Mirpur, Dhaka. The project includes the construction of six 14-storey buildings and ten 10-storey buildings.
Each flat will cover an area of 1,355 square feet and will feature two bedrooms, a drawing room, a living room, a dining area, a kitchen, and three bathrooms.
The formal title of the project is “Construction of Residential Flats on Acquired Land of the National Housing Authority to Provide Permanent Housing for Families of Martyrs of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (July 36).”
According to sources from the National Housing Authority, the project proposal is awaiting approval at the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). Upon approval, construction is expected to begin, with a completion target set for June 2029.
Additionally, a separate housing project is being planned in Mirpur to provide flats for individuals who were injured in the uprising and have since lost their ability to work.
The government recently issued the "Welfare and Rehabilitation Ordinance for the Families of Martyrs and Fighters of the July Uprising, 2025" to support these families.
According to the ordinance, 834 individuals have so far been officially recognized as martyrs. Each martyr`s family will receive a one-time payment of BDT 3 million and a monthly allowance of BDT 20,000.
Furthermore, the upcoming national budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year includes a proposed allocation of BDT 4.052 billion for the welfare of martyr families and the injured.
The funds will be used to provide lump-sum payments, monthly allowances, medical benefits, housing, and employment opportunities for the beneficiaries.
