Tribunal orders newspaper notification for 24 fugitives in Abu Sayeed Murder case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 in Bangladesh has ordered public notices to be published in newspapers against 24 fugitives in the Abu Sayeed murder case, linked to an anti-discrimination student movement at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur. The court has directed the accused to appear before the tribunal by July 22.

The order was issued on Sunday (July 13) by a bench led by Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, Chairman of the tribunal.

The tribunal also instructed authorities to produce two other accused, Rafiqul Hasan Russell and Anwar Parvez Apil, who are currently in custody in connection with another case, by showing them arrested in the Abu Sayeed murder case.

Prosecutors Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar, Abdus Sattar Palowan, and B.M. Sultan Mahmud appeared on behalf of the prosecution during the hearing.

Earlier, four accused were presented before the tribunal: former police Sub-Inspector Amir Hossain, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, Begum Rokeya University Proctor Shariful Islam, and Chhatra League activist Imran Chowdhury Akash.

The tribunal had accepted the charges on June 30, following an investigation into the murder of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was killed amid unrest tied to a student-led anti-discrimination movement.

The court had previously issued arrest warrants against the accused who remained at large.

The investigative agency submitted a report to the tribunal, implicating 30 individuals in total in connection with the killing.

The tribunal‍‍`s directive for public notification aims to ensure the presence of the fugitive accused and allow the judicial process to proceed without further delay.
