Students face discrimination applying through Muktijuddho quota

A lawyer of the Supreme Court has sent a legal notice to the university administration on behalf of an admitted student alleging various forms of discrimination while admitting under the Muktijudha quota at Dhaka University (DU).

The notice was sent on Tuesday to the university’s Vice-chancellor, Pro VC (Education), registrar, and dean of the arts faculty.

Supreme Court lawyer M Noman Hossain Talukder sent the notice on behalf of Mohaiminul, a student admitted in the current session of the Persian language and literature department. If the matter is not resolved within three days, a writ petition is declared in the high court.

It was said in the admission notice that the chosen subject will be given to the nominees with the Muktijuddha quota even if the subject of choice is the lowest in the form.

However, later, on the day of the interview, this student was nominated for the Department of Persian Language and Literature. Although Persian language and literature were not in his subject choice form, he was asked to be admitted in this regard even after the Muktijoddha quota seat was vacant.

According to the notice, 119 seats were allotted for the freedom fighter quota under the ‘B’ unit. But due to various reasons, some seats were vacant. We submitted a verbal and written application to the authority to admit him in those vacant seats by internal migration. The authority overlooked this issue.

In the notice, it was requested to provide admission opportunities in the minimum subjects of choice, full 119 seats allotted for freedom fighters quota and internal migration.

“Persian Language and Culture were not in the choice list of my client but he was forced to admit in this subject,” Lawyer M Noman Hossain Talukder said, adding, “the university administration is not giving the opportunity to internal migration in Muktijoddha quota. Although the rest of the students are getting this opportunity.
