Three-year diploma plan under review for polytechnics

A proposal to bring down the length of polytechnic diploma courses from four years to three is now being examined by policymakers, signaling a possible shift in Bangladesh’s technical education system.

The issue came up during a recent development review meeting under the Technical and Madrasa Education Division, where officials discussed ways to improve efficiency and better align training with job market needs.

At the meeting, Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon emphasized the importance of focusing on quality over expansion, urging authorities to modernize existing institutions instead of taking on unnecessary projects.

Officials involved in the discussion said a shorter course duration could allow students to start working earlier, reducing both time and financial pressure on families. They also pointed out that diploma programmes were originally three years long before being extended without major curriculum changes.

Alongside the proposal, plans to introduce model polytechnic institutes were highlighted, aiming to produce skilled workers capable of competing in international labour markets.

However, education experts have cautioned that simply reducing the duration without revising the curriculum could affect learning outcomes and practical training quality.

The meeting, chaired by Muhammad Rafiqul Islam, also reviewed broader plans to expand technical training opportunities while making better use of existing facilities.

The proposal is still under review, and officials say any final decision will depend on policy approval after further evaluation.
