Iraq have secured a place in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in four decades after beating Bolivia 2-1 in an intercontinental playoff.

The decisive match was held in Mexico on Tuesday, where Iraq national football team became the 48th and final team to qualify for the tournament.

Iraq took an early lead through Ali Al-Hamadi, who scored with a header from a corner in the ninth minute. Bolivia responded before halftime, with Moises Paniagua finding the net to level the score.

In the second half, Iraq regained control when captain Aymen Hussein scored the winning goal after a well-built attacking move. Despite strong pressure from Bolivia in the closing minutes, Iraq’s defense held firm to secure the victory.

The win is especially notable as Iraq’s preparation was disrupted by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Players had to travel for nearly three days from Baghdad to reach Mexico.

Coached by Graham Arnold, Iraq will now compete in a tough group alongside France, Senegal and Norway.

This marks Iraq’s return to the World Cup since their last appearance in 1986, making it a historic achievement for the team and its supporters.
