Telecom operators seek fuel, power support to avoid disruptions

Mobile telecom operators in Bangladesh have urged the government to ensure priority fuel supply and stable electricity, warning that shortages could disrupt nationwide communication services.

In a statement on Thursday, the Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh said the sector is facing growing challenges due to global fuel uncertainty and frequent power outages.

Operators said rising geopolitical tensions have increased concerns over fuel availability, which could affect uninterrupted telecom services across the country.

Although the government has issued instructions to support the sector, operators said the situation on the ground has not fully improved. They warned of possible disruptions to network operations if conditions do not stabilise soon.

Recent storms have also worsened the situation, causing longer power outages in areas served by the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board. Operators fear the problem may intensify during the upcoming rainy season.

To address the risks, telecom companies have called for urgent measures, including uninterrupted fuel supply for network sites, reduced load shedding at critical facilities and faster restoration of electricity after outages.

Bangladesh’s telecom network includes around 45,000 towers, along with data centres and network operation hubs, serving nearly 185 million people across the country.

Industry leaders said the network depends heavily on fuel-powered generators during power cuts, making reliable fuel supply essential to maintain services.

They urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure continuous fuel and electricity support, warning that any disruption could impact connectivity and the country’s digital economy.
