Punjab province in Pakistan has introduced free public transport, aiming to make travel more affordable and reduce fuel use.

The decision was announced by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz shortly after the federal government revealed a similar plan for Islamabad.

In a message shared on social media, she encouraged people to use public transport, describing it as a convenient and cost-effective option.

Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said the federal government would also cover public transport costs in the capital.

The move comes as authorities look for ways to ease pressure from rising fuel costs and encourage more people to shift away from private vehicles.

Similar steps have been seen elsewhere, with Australia’s Victoria and Tasmania announcing plans to remove fares to promote fuel savings and reduce transport expenses.

Officials say the initiative could help improve mobility while supporting more sustainable travel habits.
