Bangladesh is currently hosting about 1.19 million Rohingya people who fled Myanmar, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman told parliament on Tuesday.

He said the figure stands at 1,189,213, citing a recent report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Responding to a question in the House, the minister said the government is working through diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Myanmar.

He said Bangladesh is following past experience in repatriation and continuing engagement with the international community to find a lasting solution.

The minister also highlighted ongoing legal efforts to hold Myanmar accountable. He said cases are being handled at the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court over alleged crimes against the Rohingya.

He added that Bangladesh is supporting these processes by providing information and cooperation to investigators.

According to the minister, international mechanisms are also collecting evidence of serious human rights violations committed against the Rohingya community.

He said Bangladesh’s position remains clear that the only long-term solution is the safe, dignified and voluntary return of the Rohingya to their homeland.

The minister added that the government will continue diplomatic and legal efforts to resolve the crisis while supporting the displaced population on humanitarian grounds.
