In the past seven months, 12 officials from various levels of the prison department have been dismissed, and 270 others have faced various forms of punishment, according to Brigadier General Syed Mohammad Motaher Hossain, the Director General of Prisons.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday afternoon at the Department of Prisons, the Director General explained that "In the past seven months, 12 officers from different levels have been dismissed, 6 have been forced into retirement, and 84 have been suspended temporarily."
He further emphasized, "The prison department is taking strict action against any officer or employee who violates the rules. We are holding those accountable for their actions without any leniency."
The Director General assured that swift action is being taken against any official who is accused of wrongdoing.
During the press conference, when asked about recent developments, he also mentioned that over 700 prisoners are still on the run following the large-scale uprising.
Among these, 69 are convicted criminals, including six militants.
Additionally, the Director General revealed that the central prison has a capacity of 42,877 inmates, but currently, there are 70,065 prisoners housed in it, far exceeding its intended capacity.
