Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said at a budget session of the National Parliament that Bangladesh’s healthcare system is under significant pressure, with millions of patients unable to receive hospital beds.

He said, “I have a statistic with me. I am sharing it for everyone to know. It has been estimated that, roughly, around 40 lakh people across Bangladesh’s hospitals end up lying on the floor because beds cannot be provided. This is a country with a very large population. Naturally, the government has limitations.”

He made these remarks today (Sunday) during the 18th working day of the second session of the 13th National Parliament (budget session).

He further said, “The state has limitations in resources. That is why we have taken initiatives. We will make people aware of what activities to avoid, and how following proper diet and lifestyle habits can help prevent illness and maintain good health.”

Emphasizing preventive healthcare, he added, “We want to implement the policy of ‘prevention is better than cure.’ For that reason, we are planning to recruit 100,000 healthcare workers across the country, who will go door to door in villages. They will educate mothers and sisters, because they are the ones who largely manage family health, food, and hygiene.”

He also said, “They will explain which foods help reduce the risk of heart disease, which foods to avoid to prevent kidney problems, and what to do to avoid blood pressure and other illnesses. These healthcare workers will operate at the community level.”

Finally, the Prime Minister expressed hope that over time people will benefit from these initiatives. He said that if patient numbers decrease, it will become possible to provide better services in hospitals.
