In response to a clash with Dhaka University (DU) students, students from seven affiliated colleges have announced a Dhaka-wide blockade.
The students declared an indefinite protest in front of their colleges, starting at 9 AM today (Monday).
The announcement was made at a press briefing held around 3 AM early Monday at Nilkhet intersection.
Before this, on Sunday evening around 6 PM, the students of these seven colleges blocked the Science Lab intersection.
They were upset because, earlier that day, some students went to meet DU`s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education), Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, to discuss progress on their five demands. According to the students, Dr. Ahmed mistreated them during the meeting, which led to the outrage.
In protest of this incident, students from Dhaka College, along with students from other affiliated colleges, marched towards the Pro-Vice Chancellor`s residence at 11 PM on Sunday night.
At the same time, DU students gathered to confront them, leading to a tense standoff at Nilkhet intersection. What followed was a heated exchange, with both groups throwing bricks and chasing each other.
The clash continued until 3 AM, turning Nilkhet into a chaotic scene. Police had to step in, firing tear gas and sound grenades multiple times to bring the situation under control.
Eventually, four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were called in to help restore order.
Hasnat Abdullah, the convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, arrived at the scene at 1 AM, but his attempts to calm things down were unsuccessful.
A total of seven people, including a passerby, were injured during the clashes. They were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
