Farooque, the stage name of legendary actor Akbar Hossain Pathan, died in Singapore.
Farooque, also a lawmaker in Bangladesh, passed away in Mount Elizabeth Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for the previous two years, about 8:30 in the morning.
Rawshan Hossain Pathan Shorot, the actor's son, confirmed the news of his father's passing on Monday.
In the most recent general election, Farooque, a freedom fighter, film producer as well as businessman, was chosen by the people to represent Dhaka-17 as a member of parliament.
He featured in almost 150 films over the course of a career that lasted more than five decades, making his big-screen debut in H Akbar's "Jolchhobi" and winning the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1975 for his work in the film Lathiyal.
