Railway authorities have introduced a transshipment system to ease passenger movement after nine coaches of the Nil Sagar Express derailed near Santahar in Bogura on Wednesday, disrupting train services on several northern routes.

Bangladesh Railway Additional Director General (Operations) Mohammad Nazmul Islam said it could take around 12 hours to clear the damaged coaches and restore normal rail communication.

Until the line is fully operational, passengers will have to change trains at designated points near the accident site to continue their journeys.

Several intercity trains will operate under the temporary arrangement. Panchagarh Express and Ekta Express will run on the Dhaka–Panchagarh route with transshipment, while Simanta Express and Rupsha Express will assist passengers travelling between Khulna and Nilphamari.

On the Dhaka–Parbatipur route, Parbatipur Special and Banglabandha services will operate with support from Kanchan Express.

Titumir Express and Barendra Express will handle passenger transfers on the Rajshahi–Chilahati route.

Train No. 797 Kurigram Express will operate via the Bogura–Kurigram route.

However, several services have been suspended, including Train No. 804 Banglabandha Express (Akkelpur–Rajshahi), Train No. 803 Banglabandha Express (Rajshahi–Panchagarh), and Thursday’s Banglabandha Express service from Panchagarh to Rajshahi.

Earlier in the afternoon, multiple passengers were injured when nine coaches of the Nil Sagar Express went off the tracks near Santahar Railway Station in Adamdighi upazila.

Railway authorities have formed a four-member committee to investigate the cause of the derailment.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is monitoring the situation and has instructed local authorities to take necessary measures to reduce passenger suffering and manage the disruption.
